Free VoIP Softphone

If you have friends or customers all over the world, or you would like to reach worldwide availability, then you are probably thinking about getting a softphone already. This article will tell you what it is, how it works and what you will need, so read along.

Softphones are applications that give your computer (or smartphone, tablet and so on) the funcionalities of a phone, and provide possibility to make phone calls via the Internet. They mostly provide free PC to PC calling, but if you make a call to a phone, they mostly require payment for the quality of their service.

These applications use VoIP for digital communication. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) directs voice and multimedia transmission over the Internet.

How it works:

During this process, the voice signals are converted into digital data, then those data are organised into data packets, which contain about 10-30 milliseconds of voice data each.

Then these packets are transmitted according to codecs, which are different in bandwidth requirements, compression, bitrate and voice quality. When they reach their destination, they are arranged back into the correct order and converted back into voice signals, which the recipient will hear from his or her device.
