Introduction to VoIP
Do you want to enhance the profitability of your business? We know a way to expand the area that your company can reach. It is true that PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network, the traditional, old telephone system) is the network we are used to, and most of the time it is reliable, but not fast and its quality is low. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol, read further for a definition), however is always fast and reliable, and its quality is always high. If you would like to learn more about it, then please read this page.
Voip is able to establish a connection between a computer and a telephone or even two computers. You can use it on a computer, a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant, an electronic device held in your hand), a tablet, a smartphone, a VoIP phone, and even on a PSTN phone after enabling it to use VoIP. So basically it supports everything with Internet connection and audio-video input and output (Figure 1). Ozeki Phone System can be connected to anything that uses Internet connection and audio-video input and output.
There are three definitions about protocols we need to know for a deeper understanding of VoIP. These are protocol itself, Internet Protocol and Voice over Internet Protocol.
- Protocol: it is a set of rules, a predefined order of a work process. Here it regulates data transmission.
- Internet Protocol (IP): Data, compressed into data packets is transmitted via the Internet according to this protocol. It also defines the addresses that each computer connected to the network gets. This address is called IP address.
- Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP): It defines how voice communications and multimedia sessions are transmitted through the Internet.
VoIP work process
Voice and video signals are compressed into 10 to 30-millisecond long data packets according to codecs, and these are the digitalized data that are sent via the network. Once it has reached its destination address the appropriate device (ATA or voip phone), it is transformed back into the original voice signal in the appropriate order, which is what your conversation partner will hear in his or her phone, or speakers/headphones.
