VoIP PBX or IP PBX is a telephone system, which handles with calls among local VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol, which is responsible for control over voice transmission via the Internet) users, who can also make external calls, even to a device connected to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network, or the traditional telecommunication we are used to). A PBX has lots of other functions, if you are interested in these, please check out this page.
What a PBX is used for:
- Data storage
- Establishing and terminating connection
- Maintaining the established connection
Working Process
You must have seen it in movies or in real life when manual switchboards were used in small towns in case of a phone call. We saw a huge board with lots of cables and jacks and signaling lights in it and a lady connected the cables to the desired jacks.
That is basically how a PBX works as well. It connects the caller (from inside or outside the local network) to the desired extension. Then it keeps the connection alive as long as the conversation partners talk, and then it terminates the session, as if say it would plug out a virtual cable.
Nowadays no such cables are needed of course, especially not for a VoIP PBX, as it uses the Internet for the entire process. It has the numbers of all the extensions so when one of them is dialled it knows where to switch the call.
