FAX in VoIP Environments

Fax was designed to analog networks, so it does not work really well in VoIP network. The reason for this is that communication through fax uses the signals in a different way than the traditional voice communication. When the analog voice communication is digitalized and compressed with the help of VoIP technology, it is optimalized to transmit voice instead of fax. So there are plenty of things to take into consideration using a VoIP telephone system.

If you want to use your old fax machine and connect it to the VoIP phone system, the best solution is to use a VoIP gateway and an ATA that supports T38. T38 is a protocol that is designed to be able for the fax to forward data on network. Connecting to computer-based fax is also possible, and to choose a VoIP phone system that supports fax.

In case of switching to a VoIP system, fax can also be used in a way that fax machine ca be connected directly to the existing analog phone line and bypass the VoIP system.
