What is Ring Group?

Have you ever wondered whether it would be possible for your company to define certain groups to which the incoming calls would specifically be forwarded? You could create different groups for all of your departments and smaller groups within those departments. Are you wondering how it would be possible? Then please read further on.

Ring group refers to a virtual extension that rings a group of phones at the same time, but stops as soon as a member of the group answers it (Figure 1). Although a group has several extensions, those extensions can also have their own Direct Dial-In (DID, which makes it possible to call that certain extension directly) numbers so that they could be called directly, too, sparing time of the caller.

There are several possible ways to call phones that belong to a ring group:

  • The first available channel rings
  • If the first phone is occupied then either none or all of the other will ring.
  • Each available extension can be rung.
  • The extension of the first member on the list rings then first and second, then first and second and third and so on, until one of them answers.
  • All of the phones ring until one of them answers.

You can specify a ring time, or a certain length of time, after which "no answer" is realised. If a call exceeds this time, you can give a new destination to the call, or direct it to voicemail, or you can choose from many other options.

In general, a ring group means a virtual extension, which might be specified as an outgoing extension, in a PBX. You also need to define the telephone extensions that belong to a certain group, while configuring it.

When these groups have been created, all incoming calls will be forwarded to the extensions in the desired group. If any members of the group answers the phone, the phones of the other members will stop ringing and a communication channel will be set up between the phone of the member who picked up the phone and the telephone system.

As ring groups are virtual extensions in a Public Branch eXchange (PBX, which switches telephone calls to the desired extension), they can be simply routed. The simple and transparent Ozeki Phone System is the best choice to get to such ringing groups effectively.

The Ozeki Phone System makes it possible for you to get support for setting call routing rules and for creating and managing your groups. Any number of SIP (Session Initiation Protocol, which starts, maintains and ends a multimedia session via the Internet) accounts can be added to one group, and one SIP account can also be added to several ring groups due to the virtuality of these groups within the PBX. Ozeki Phone System provides you the highest expertise and quality, and the easiest way of usage in the field.
